Pitt @ UConn 2/16/09

February 16, 2009

A really quick preview of tonight’s Pitt/UConn match-up.

  • The game is at 7 on ESPN
  • UConn is ranked number 1 in the country
  • UConn will be without Jerome Dyson, their third leading scorer
  • Match-up to watch: UConn center Hasheem Thabeet vs Pitt forward DeJuan Blair
  • Pitt’s only 2 losses have come on the road to ranked teams this year

What Pitt will need to do to win:

  • Keep turnovers to a minimum as they’ve done almost all year
  • Keep Blair out of foul trouble, their 2 losses have come when Blair has struggled with fouls
  • Have good perimeter shooting. Its likely that Thabeet may keep Blair from being effective inside
  • If that’s the case then Jermaine Dixon, Pitt’s best 3 point shooter, will have a big impact on the game
  • Also, look to see if Levance Fields thinks he needs to take the game into his hands by driving to the bucket and hitting some timely 3s
  • Sam Young will need to hit his signature mid-range jumpers tonight

Sleeper: look for Brown or Biggs to step up in this game as Blair could be over-matched inside with Thabeet. If those two guys play well, expect Pitt to pull out the upset.
