Pens Preview: Epic Weekend

February 20, 2009

pens-logo1In preparation for this post, I did a google image search for “weekend” and “epic weekend.” However, the glittery Garfield wasn’t quite what I was looking for. I did bookmark it for a future “LOL! Work sux” post.

As my searches indicate, this weekend has the potential to be epic for the Pens.

Pittsburgh will face two conference rivals: the Philadelphia Flyers (L10 6-4-0) and the Washington Capitals (L10 7-1-2). The Pens will be in Philadelphia tomorrow for a 1:00 game and in Washington on Sunday for NBC’s game of the week at 12:30. Both teams are ahead of the Pens in the Eastern Conference standings. Philadelphia is in fourth place while Washington shares the second spot with New Jersey.

Pittsburgh and Philly last met Jan 13 and the Pens managed a 4-2 win. The Flyers have some pretty crazy special teams (leading the NHL in SHGs), so obviously the Pens need to rock the PP and avoid silly penalties. The Pens were destroyed at home, 6-3, when the Capitals were last in town on Jan 14. Because this game will be on NBC, be prepared for Ovechkin vs. Crosby-Malkin hype. *Yawn*

The Pens need to come out of this with at least two points. Three would be sweet and four would be awesome. With the recent morale boost/attitude change and the gelling of the Bylsma system, the two point target is doable, nay, going to happen. The guys are pumped. They’re going to do this even though there’s no time for pre-game naps.

The Hurricanes, Panthers, Sabres, and Canadiens are playing this weekend too contributing to the adjective “epic.” The Pens are currently battling the Canes for the critical eighth place in the standings. The Panthers and Sabres are just ahead of the Canes and the Canadiens are in the middle of a potential meltdown. Basically, the right teams need to lose. The Hurricanes play two games this weekend, too. Tonight against Tampa Bay and tomorrow against Colorado. The chances of Carolina losing both games are slim, so the Pens need to at least match the Hurricanes’ record in order to avoid sliding farther out of playoff contention.

Go Pens.

The playoffs are definitely possible especially if the Pens keep up this momentum.

A lot also depends on other teams. Florida is on a roll but Montréal is about to implode and the Rangers are having a serious meltdown.
