What If? Capitals 5, Penguins 2

February 22, 2009

pensatcaps1Plus/Minus is a healthy scratch tonight. Instead I present: What If? That question better fits today’s game– you’ll see in a minute.

The Penguins fell, 5-2, to the Capitals this afternoon in Washington. It’s not a terrible or humiliating loss– the Caps are a good team. What sucks is that Pittsburgh is now four points out of 8th place in the Eastern Conference.

Today’s outcome made me wonder what if….

-Speed! Agression! was swapped for a more defensive strategy? The Pens lack the depth on their bench to keep up with the Caps. Washington skated all over Pittsburgh.

-Kris Letang wasn’t scratched? He would have been a better match against Washington instead of slower-than-molasses Hal Gill.

-Mathieu Garon started in net? Marc-Andre Fleury started two games in 23.5 hours and it showed.

-Mike Yeo was fired too? The simple presence of Sergei Gonchar on the PP isn’t enough to fix that abysmal mess.

-Ryan Whitney didn’t stink up the joint? Mull this one over: Whitney is -15. Kris Letang is -6.

-The game wasn’t on NBC? We would have missed a spectacular broadcast titled: Hockey for ‘Tards.

-Carolina lost to Colorado?

Next up: Islanders (minus Hilary Duff) @ Pens, Wednesday, 7:30.

The Rangers play the Leafs tonight. Bring your “A” game, Vesa.

Go Pens.
