Pirates Opening Day
The Pirates start their 2009 campaign today in St. Louis at 4:00.
Paul Maholm will get the start for the Pirates against Adam Wainwright. Expect the Pirates to have a hard time in this game as they’re facing a pretty good Cardinals team. Last season the Cardinals couldn’t overcome injuries to their pitching staff and unfortunately Albert Pujols can do everything but pitch. This year, however, the Card’s have a healthy Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright along with a solid offensive and should give the Pirates a hard time.
Maholm went 2-1 with a 3.05 ERA against the Cards last year and will be expected to put up the same numbers this year. He’s the ace of the staff and had a strong spring (2-0, 1.52 ERA) earning SI’s number 1 spot for pre-season breakout player of the year. Whether that means the Buc’s will win tonight remains to be seen.
As far as the Pirates offense goes, its pretty bleak. The departure of Xavier Nady and Jason Bay at the trade deadline last year transformed a weak offense into a feeble offense. They’ll need a low scoring game to win tonight as Nate McLouth and Adam LaRoche won’t be able to do everything.
